Comuna 13

We enter Comuna 13 through the steep streets of San Javier, on the western hillside of Medellín. This area lived through the urban conflict of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries up close, with episodes such as Operation Orión in 2002 that remain present in the memory of its residents. Today that memory is expressed in murals, music and community organization, and the neighborhood is a benchmark of social transformation. As we walk the first stretch and listen to that story of resilience, we taste a maracumango cream, the frozen blend of mango and passion fruit that became the flavor of the Comuna. We continue to Galería Renacer, where a gorilla over five meters tall, assembled from thousands of 3D-printed pieces, symbolizes the strength and protection of the neighborhood: there we take photographs and record a drone video. We go up the outdoor escalators, six sections that in 2011 replaced 350 concrete steps in Las Independencias, with a dance show and a trova show for company. At Galería de Topo we leave our own mark in a graffiti experience, and on the way back we close with an oblea at Obleas Relincho: the final flavor of a tour where history, art and community meet.
