Ecos del Pasado: a memory tour in Medellín
Four places to understand the years of drug violence through the victims and the Medellín that came after, on a private tour of memory and transformation.
Four places to understand the drug-trafficking years through the victims and the Medellín that came after.
01 · First stop · Starting point
Jardines Montesacro Cemetery
We begin in Itagüí, in the south of the valley, at the Jardines Montesacro Cemetery: a burial ground of gardens and groves where the man who headed the Medellín Cartel is buried. We do not come to pay tribute. This place is the chronological starting point of a story that belongs to the city. Between the 1980s and the early 1990s drug trafficking reached a power capable of buying, threatening and killing; Medellín endured bombings, contract killings and the highest homicide rates in its history, and an entire generation grew up in fear. In front of this place we talk about how that power worked, but above all about what it cost: the lives lost, everyday life under threat and the wounds the city is still working to heal.

- Historical context of the rise of drug trafficking and the Medellín Cartel, without glorifying anyone.
- How the violence of the 1980s and 1990s marked the everyday life of the city.
- Chronological starting point of the tour: from here on, the story belongs to Medellín and its victims.
02 · Second stop · The victims, protagonists
Inflexión Memorial Park
In El Poblado, where a building that was a symbol of the violent power of the cartel once stood, today there is a park. The Mónaco Building was demolished in February 2019 and in its place the city opened, on December 20 of that year, the Inflexión Memorial Park: 5,163 square meters with seventy trees, a seventy-meter wall of black stone with 46,612 perforations, one for every victim that drug trafficking left in Medellín between 1983 and 1994, and two paths, the path of the heroes and the path of resilience, which tell how the city resisted and rose again. Here our gaze changes: the story stops revolving around those who exercised violence and returns the center to those who suffered it, the true protagonists of this tour. It is the moment to name, remember and understand why preserving memory is an essential part of the transformation of Medellín.

- An open space for reflection, with time to walk it in silence.
03 · Third stop · The end of an era
The last scene
We continue to the center-west of the city, to the Los Olivos area, a residential neighborhood like so many others in Medellín. Here, on December 2, 1993, the life of the former head of the Medellín Cartel ended, surrounded by the Search Bloc. There is nothing to see beyond ordinary streets, and that normality is part of the message: that day closed an era, but it did not end drug trafficking or the violence, which changed shape and kept striking the city for years. From this point the story stops being that of one name and becomes that of a city that had to learn to rebuild itself, with spaces such as the Casa de la Memoria Museum, born of the victims themselves, so that what was lived is never repeated.

04 · Last stop · Transformation
Comuna 13
We close in Comuna 13, on the western hillside. This territory lived through very hard chapters of the urban violence of Medellín, with clashes between armed groups and military operations such as Operation Orión, in October 2002, which remain present in the memory of its residents. Today, among the Las Independencias escalators, opened in 2011, the murals of the Graffitour and the initiatives of its own neighbors, the Comuna shows another face of the city: the ability to turn spaces marked by fear into places where art, culture and community claim the future. It is not a simplified happy ending: it is a process that continues and deserves to be seen with respect. With it we close the tour: from criminal power to the victims, from memory to transformation.
