Pueblos Mágicos: four towns of eastern Antioquia

Private tour from Medellín: dessert in San Antonio de Pereira, ceramics in El Carmen de Viboral, the Tequendamita waterfall and lunch in El Retiro.

Four towns of eastern Antioquia in one day, on a private tour at your pace.

01 · First stop · Dessert at Dulce Contigo

San Antonio de Pereira

The tour begins in San Antonio de Pereira, the district of Rionegro that eastern Antioquia associates with one thing: desserts. Its park, presided over by an eighteenth-century colonial church, is the heart of a town of low houses, cafés and sweet shop windows. We get to know the area, visit the church and make our first stop at Dulce Contigo, one of the most renowned dessert shops on the park, with dozens of options for every taste. The dessert is included: the sweetest possible start to the day.

Dessert included

  • A walk around the park and a visit to the colonial church of San Antonio de Pereira.
  • Dessert at Dulce Contigo, one of the most famous dessert shops in town, included.
  • The dessert town of eastern Antioquia, a step away from Rionegro.

02 · Second stop · Walking tour and copetuda

El Carmen de Viboral

We continue to El Carmen de Viboral, the ceramics capital of Colombia. Since 1898 the town has hand-painted its pottery: blue brushstrokes, flowers and rims that leapt from tableware to facades, walls and streets. On a walking tour we explore the Calle de la Cerámica and the town center, with excellent photo spots among decorated houses and workshops. Before moving on, we toast with the copetuda, the local drink of the town: chamomile tea, the everyday herbal infusion of El Carmen, with a shot of eight-year-old rum and the juice of half a lime. It is included and enjoyed slowly, as part of the cultural tour.

Copetuda included

  • Walking tour along the Calle de la Cerámica and the center of El Carmen.
  • The tradition of hand-painted pottery, alive since 1898.
  • Photo spots among facades and walls decorated with ceramics.
  • Copetuda included: chamomile, eight-year-old rum and lime.

03 · Third stop · Tequendamita waterfall

Tequendamita

On the way to El Retiro, in the Don Diego district, the landscape changes from town to mountain. We arrive at the Tequendamita waterfall, where the La Chuscala stream drops about twenty meters among forest and rock, wrapped in the humidity of the vegetation. We go in and explore the place calmly: the waterfall seen head-on, the constant murmur of the drop and the light filtering through the trees make this the most natural stop of the day, and the most photogenic. It is the green pause before the closing in El Retiro.

Waterfall and nature

  • A visit to the Tequendamita waterfall, in the Don Diego district of El Retiro.
  • The roughly twenty-meter drop of the La Chuscala stream, seen head-on.
  • Forest, humidity and photographs at the most natural point of the tour.

04 · Last stop · Gourmet lunch and the Tienda de Pedro Luis

El Retiro

The closing is El Retiro, founded in 1790 under the name El Cuarzo and today one of the most elegant towns in eastern Antioquia, the cradle of the timber industry of the region. Its Santander park and the colonial houses of the center are architectural heritage of the department. We begin with a gourmet lunch, included in the experience, and then walk its streets of balconies, murals and woodworking shops. The ending has a name of its own: the Tienda de Pedro Luis, a century-old house where, for more than four decades, visitors have been pinning banknotes from all over the world with messages on the walls, tables and ceilings. Leaving ours is the way to close the day.

Lunch included

  • Gourmet lunch in El Retiro, included in the experience.
  • A stroll through Santander park and the streets of colonial houses, heritage of Antioquia.
